<image:caption>Families often tell us that these moments - unhurried, intentional, and supported - help them begin the healing process and bring a sense of peace to an otherwise overwhelming time. A vigil, whether held in the home, hospital, or hospice, is more than a ritual. It is a loving gift: the gift of time, presence, and dignity as we say goodbye.</image:caption>

<image:title>Death Education - 3 Meaningful Ways to Be With Your Person Before Cremation - You Can Keep Your Person At Home After They Die</image:title>
<image:caption>In the United States, we hold a lot of misconceptions about what’s “supposed” to happen after someone dies. One of the most common? That if a person dies at home, they need to be removed immediately and rushed off to a funeral home asap. That’s simply not true. It’s legal to keep your loved one at home after death, though the exact time frame varies by state. Here in California, there’s no legal limit. But once a funeral home has been called to take your person into their care, the clock starts ticking. By law, they have to be in refrigeration within a certain number of hours from that first call. If cremation is your chosen method of disposition, that time before they leave your care can be one of the most meaningful windows to honor and connect with them.</image:caption>

It’s not that people are making light of death itself, but rather that in sharing stories and exploring this often-taboo subject, moments of joy and humor naturally arise. In a way, these moments remind us that even in the face of death, there is room for levity and connection. Photo from Death Cafe hosted by The Death Network in San Diego</image:caption>

<image:caption>The level of formality often depends on the family's wishes and the nature of the service. If there's uncertainty, it's always better to err on the side of more formal attire. <image:title>Death Education - End of Life Planning: The Unfinished Business Checklist for Your Family - When to Start Planning</image:title>
<image:caption>It is never too early to start planning for the end of your life, as nobody knows what will happen tomorrow. An important first step is to speak to an estate lawyer who can help you create a will, establish a trust, establish powers of attorney, and guide you with other tasks. Secondly, we recommend that you start comprehensively organizing your information and alerting a few trusted individuals of the location of this information. And lastly, it is important that you start communicating with your loved ones about your end-of-life and funerary preferences so that they are aware of and can honor your wishes. <image:caption>“If a child is having a hard time processing their grief, be patient. Grief is so complex and hard to navigate. It’s important to know that children will process their grief at each developmental level. This means they will understand death and their loss differently as they grow and mature. With that being said, there is no set timeframe in which a child needs to process their loss. What they need is space and support to explore their grief across their development.” -Shea Wingate, LCSW</image:caption>

<image:title>Death Education - What to Say to Someone Who is Grieving: Condolence and Comfort in Action - An Understanding Mindset</image:title>
<image:caption>When it comes to grief, it’s much less about someone learning to heal, or getting over the loss of death. Most of the time the hole left by someone dying doesn’t get smaller, but those still surviving with that hole learn to grow around the hole and live with the absence, the loss. Understanding this is a distinction that can lead to a bereaved person feeling supported in a community, rather than feeling left alone to deal with the weight of grief by themselves.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Sue Rodriguez wanted the right to end her life on her own terms; to decide how, when, and who controlled the way she would die. And she was determined to fight for that right. In 1993, Rodriguez brought her argument all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada, which ultimately decided she had no legal right to ask anyone to help her die. In early 2015, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that a ban on medically assisted death was unconstitutional and MAID became legal in Canada.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A Home Funeral offers the opportunity to pause after death and let our hearts, minds and bodies settle into the reality that our person has died. Home Funerals are legal in every state, yet most have no idea this authentic send-off is available.</image:caption>

<image:title>Death Education - Home Funeral: A more meaningful send-off at the end of life - Death Doulas are restoring time honored death care practices.</image:title>
<image:caption>Long before the funeral industry as we know it today, friends and family cared for the dying and the dead. It was a last act of love carried out by those closest to the deceased. While the inner circle was preparing the body, the community would show up with meals and to support those who were grieving. Today, we are far removed from caring for own, and a Death Doula can help educate and guide chosen family through this loving ritual.</image:caption>

<image:title>Death Education - Home Funeral: A more meaningful send-off at the end of life - Funerals Then, and Now;</image:title>
<image:caption>During the Civil War, funerals were changed from a family- and community-based ritual to a commodified service. Fast-forward to today, and these funeral services sometimes have exorbitant costs and a large environmental impact. Fortunately, Green Burial and Natural Organic Reduction are trending new options which are friendlier to your body and the planet! Our bodies are designed to decompose, our modern funeral practices are disrupting that natural process. Photo: Larkspur Conservation Cemetery</image:caption>

<image:title>Death Education - Home Funeral: A more meaningful send-off at the end of life - Home Funerals create the space for grief;</image:title>
<image:caption>As the grief of loss sets in, turning to our family, whether by blood or by choice, friends, and community helps to spread the pressing weight around. When we come together for a home funeral, it’s a time to pause, reflect and say good-bye before your person is in the hands of the funeral professionals. This pause can be helpful to how we integrate our grief in the upcoming weeks, months and years.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Children grieve differently than adults. I like to remind my clients that children 'jump in and out of grief.' It's common for a child to cry and miss mommy one moment, then run outside to play with the neighbors the next. So don't be surprised if your child moves in and out of grief quickly. It is important to remember that behavior is a child's language. This means their grief could show up through behavioral changes, especially regression.” - Shea Wingate</image:caption>

      <image:title>Death Education - How to Support a Grieving Child</image:title>
<image:caption>“If a child is having a hard time processing their grief, be patient. Grief is so complex and hard to navigate. It's important to know that children will process their grief at each developmental level. This means they will understand death and their loss differently as they grow and mature. With that being said, there is no set timeframe in which a child needs to process their loss. What they need is space and support to explore their grief across their development.” - Shea Wingate</image:caption>

      <image:title>Death Education - How to Support a Grieving Child</image:title>
<image:caption>“My favorite activity to support a family in talking about grief is to task the child with a Life Imprint tool. A Life Imprint tool is a series of questions aimed to imprint on the child how they are similar to and shaped by their loved one who has died. The child finds out these answers by "interviewing" adults who knew the deceased. Examples of these questions include: In what way did (the person who died) impact my mannerisms, my beliefs, my likes, and my dislikes? This simple activity is a great way to help the child create a connection.” - Shea Wingate</image:caption>

      <image:title>Death Education - How to Support a Grieving Child</image:title>
<image:caption>“Children who experience grief are at a higher risk for mental health concerns such as depression and anxiety in adulthood. It is important to support continued bounds through activities like a memory box and Life Imprint tool and open conversations about loss throughout their development. I recommend families seek psychological support if behavioral or mood changes persist six months following the death of a loved one. Having extra support and care from a grief therapist can be a great tool for positive outcomes. A grief therapist can provide a space for processing and teach helpful coping skills to manage distress after a loss.” - Shea Wingate</image:caption>

<image:caption>Though there is a new shift in thinking and talking about death, tree pod burials still have an upward battle. The same can be said for natural burials in general, as public perception tends to skew more towards the status quo. Regulations, standards, and laws differ across states and countries, all reflecting different attitudes and beliefs about death and how we humans should deal with it. Therefore, Tree Pod burials are currently not an option in the US.</image:caption>

<image:title>Death Education - Standard Cremation vs. Direct Cremation: Breaking Down the Differences - The Death Network’s Key Points When weighing standard cremation vs. direct cremation, it comes down to personal priorities around ceremonial significance, costs, and customization. Main takeaways to remember include:</image:title>
<image:caption>Direct cremation is substantially more affordable than standard cremation Standard cremation includes more extensive funeral services for ceremonies and viewing Direct cremation allows more freedom and flexibility in memorialization</image:caption>

<image:title>Death Education - Standard Cremation vs. Direct Cremation: Breaking Down the Differences - First, what exactly does standard cremation and direct cremation involve? Here’s a quick look of what each entails: Standard Cremation</image:title>

<image:title>Death Education - Standard Cremation vs. Direct Cremation: Breaking Down the Differences</image:title>
<image:caption>Fortunately, there are very few legal or regulatory differences between standard and direct cremation. The required paperwork, such as death certificates and permits for cremation, is the same. The key consideration is ensuring the deceased’s cremation authorization form has been completed and submitted by the next of kin. This grants permission for the cremation to take place. As long as this requirement is met, families can choose either standard or direct cremation. The cremation journey is unique for every family. Whether you choose standard or direct cremation, the most important factor is being able to honor your loved one in a way that brings comfort. Take time to weigh all cremation service aspects as you make the decisions that feel right for your circumstances.</image:caption>

With over 225,000 cemeteries spread across the US alone, taking up around 140,000 acres, the effect modern and conventional burial practices have on their surrounding environment and ecosystems can’t be ignored.
